Postgraduate Dental Education Centre (PgDEC)

Where is PgDEC?

The University of Manchester, School of Dentistry, NHS Manchester and Archway Dental opened the Postgraduate Dental Education Centre (PgDEC) on 20 May 2011.

Located close to the University campus, the PgDEC is situated within Hulme and serves patients within this ward and neighbouring Moss Side.

Working closely with NHS Manchester, the School of Dentistry developed an innovative solution to the provision of primary and advanced dental care for these patients.

Archway Dental is a modern primary care dental practice and provides the infrastructure and estate for the PgDEC.

Patients' facilities

As soon as patients, staff and students arrive, it's clear this is a different type of practice. Patients are greeted in a spacious and contemporary reception area. After a short wait, they enter into the main clinical area. Individual consulting rooms offer an opportunity to discuss dental treatments away from the surgical areas.

Student teaching space

Self-contained surgeries occupy the main space for the primary care component of the practice each containing state-of-the-art teaching chairs. The space is light, airy and ideal for the close teaching support that characterises the postgraduate programmes at the School of Dentistry.

Digital radiography is provided for both intra- and extra-oral imaging and networked computers are available at every clinical station.

Students benefit from the ability to schedule patients, view radiographs and plan their clinical team in conjunction with Archway Dental and academic staff.

The teaching space is enhanced with a phantom head facility located within the practice and a clinical seminar room.

Other equipment

A decontamination suite, designed to meet best practice, ensures a fast turn around for cleaning clinical equipment.

High-quality surgical microscopes for endodontic procedures are available. The partnership wishes to recognise the capital investment from both the Strategic Health Authority and the University that have been essential in equipping the centre to such a high standard.

The University is delighted to be able, through their educational programmes, to provide high-quality clinical service for our neighbours in Hulme and evidences the institution’s ongoing commitment to serve the population within which it works.
