Facts and figures
Top UK dental school
The School of Dentistry has topped the list of UK dental schools in the 'Times Good University Guide' for 2011. Manchester beat off competition from the 13 other UK dental schools included in the table which recognises excellence in teaching, research and the National Student Survey.
Professor Iain Mackie, Head of the Dental School said, "This is brilliant news which reflects the efforts of everyone. Last year we were ranked 3rd in the list so this move to first place truly reflects a whole school effort."
Our mission
The School of Dentistry's mission is to be a community focused on world-class developments in oral healthcare, research and education. The undergraduate programme is recognised for its innovation, and the School was the first in the UK to introduce outreach clinical teaching, where students treat patients in the community.
The strength of the teaching was also recognised by the latest government review, when the School was awarded maximum points with special commendation for the quality of its student support and guidance, IT infrastructure and the use of problem-based learning.
With world-leading researchers in basic dental science and health-services research there are plenty of opportunities for research at MPhil and PhD levels. In addition, there are flourishing postgraduate clinical training programmes co-ordinated by leading dental specialists and researchers.
The School is somewhat unusual for a UK dental school in that it is situated on a bustling university campus. It is also close to Manchester's vibrant and cosmopolitan city centre.
